First With Safety Awareness
Elaine Cobos from Phoenix, AZ is the 2003 FWSA Safety Person to the Year. Chris Klug, 2002 Bronze Medal Olympic Winner in Salt Lake City for Snowboard GS, presented this award to Elaine on behalf of Aspen/Snowmass Ski Resort, The Gant and Daly Lane Properties, the sponsors of the award.
To Elaine, promoting safety means acting as a club safety representative, publishing articles on safety in newsletters, speaking on safety issues at meetings or on trips, and raising the awareness of members toward the need for everyone to practice safety 100% of the time. Elaine is a business project manager with Motorola, Inc. and is president of the corporate-sponsored Motorola Ski Club, based in the Phoenix area. She has a BS in History from Cal State University – Hayward and her master’s certificate in Project Management from George Washington University. She holds certifications as an Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and Project Management Professional (PMP). She has raced for Motorola Ski Club and won the overall President’s Race during the Jaeger Cup Challenge, the Arizona Ski Council race event during the annual ASC early season trip to Telluride, CO. In her spare time, she is also president of the Arizona Ski Council. When she is not skiing, Elaine enjoys hiking, camping, bicycling, motorcycles, theatre, jazz and traveling. Elaine has been chosen as Arizona Council Woman of the Year in 2002 and 2003. At the 2003 FWSA Convention Elaine was chosen FWSA Councils’ Woman of the Year.
Under agreement with Aspen Skiing Company, The Gant and Daly Lane Properties, Elaine will receive a trip for two to Aspen, seven nights lodging between the Gant and a property to be determined by Daly Lane Properties and six days skiing plus rentals at any of the fabulous mountains in Aspen. He will also receive roundtrip airfare to Aspen for two persons.

Next year we will select another person within FWSA who does the most to promote safe skiing and safety programs. Judging will be by club nomination and will be done by an esteemed group of safety experts and leaders of FWSA. All applications must be submitted two weeks before the beginning of Convention. Watch for the applications in your Councilman and remember FWSA is First With Safety Awareness!
