All snow sports participants can appreciate how critically improtant safety is to all of us.  Our sports take place in ski areas which do a great job at controlling many things which could cause us harm.  Excessive speed, inattentiveness, and failure to look around are some of the main causes for injuries.  The FWSA is a proponent of safety in skiing and snowboarding.  Every year we hear about tragic deaths and injuries that happen during our favorite winter activities which reminds us of the great improtance of safety.  We have a number of ways in which we promote safety and one of our more visable ways is through the Safety Award.

ASPEN-SNOWMASS
has been sponsoring a Safety Person of the Year Award since 1998.  They have pledged support for the award for three more years.

The award is for the individual, within the association, that has done the most to promote safety through a number of criteria. These include articles, on slope safety, and other ways to raise safety consciousness. This contest has been sponsored by ASPEN SKIING COMPANY since its inception. We would like to thank
Aspen’s representatives Kris McKinnon and Mary Manning for presenting the award.   While every ski resort promotes safety, Aspen has proven their dedication to making safety an important issue by rewarding these individuals with a fabulous ski vacation. This includes a 7-day package for 2 including airfare, lodging, 6 days of lift tickets, rental equipment, lessons, a mountain tour with an employee, and an appearance on the local TV show, Aspen Today. Aspen has also won the industry safety award from the National Ski Areas Association.

The Winner of this year's SPOY is the dynamic CATHERINE OHL, who is also the president of Pacific Rim Snowsports Alliance (SD and LA Councils). Catherine also won this award in 1999.  She has been a constant supporter of safe skiing and has authored many informative articles. Many of you are also aware of her tremendous importance to the FWSA as web designer and all around superwoman.

Other finalists included TJ Barnes (
North Island Snowdrifters), Rodg Magee (Don Diego), and Rusty Crook (Reno Ski and Rec.).  They also provided great insight into safety issues.

Remember SAFETY IS HAVING FUN CONSCIOUSLY!!!
