Safety is preeminent in participation in any sports. Snow sports, in particular, can involve high speed and high risk. Therefore the area of safety is both relevant and very important to the Association.

The Safety Person of the Year Award is awarded to the individual within the association that has done the most to promote safety through a number of criteria. These include, articles, on slope safety, and other ways to raise safety consciousness. This contest has been sponsored by ASPEN SKIING COMPANY. They have announced that they will continue sponsorship through 2006 and perhaps beyond. We would like to thank Aspen’s representative Mary Manning for presenting the award.   While every ski resort promotes safety, Aspen has proven their dedication to making safety an important issue by rewarding these individuals with a fabulous ski vacation. This includes a 7 day package for 2 including airfare, lodging, 6 days of lift tickets, rental equipment, lessons, a mountain tour with an employee, and an appearance on the local TV show, Aspen Today.

The 2004 winner is BOB ELLIS, our own Far West Racing Association President.  Bob is a long time member of the Bota Baggers Ski Club of the Bay Area Council. Bob has contributed to safety through written articles and producing a safety video.  His on slope activites include supervising safety on the racecourses and giving ski lessons.  He is a worthy recipient.

Othe finalists included Catherine Ohl, Hank Collins, M.D., Rick Bonnett, and Jodie Dierickx.

Next year we will select another person within FWSA who does the most to promote safe skiing and safety programs. Judging will be by club nomination and will be done by an esteemed group of safety experts and leaders of FWSA. Applications must be submitted by May 9, 2005.
